Tokyo, June 13, 2005 --- NEC Corporation today announced that it
has joined the United Nations Global Compact. The Global Compact
was officially launched in July 2000 at United Nations Headquarters
in New York in accordance with the basic philosophy of nine
principles of business activities related to human rights, labor,
and the environment that were proposed by United Nations Secretary
General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, in January 1999. An anti-corruption principle was
added in June 2004. The Global Compact thus has ten principles
now.
The ten principles are closely aligned with the NEC Group Charter
of Corporate Behavior and NEC Group Code of Conduct, which were
established in April 2004 as the platform to better fulfill
corporate social responsibility. In addition, NEC's participation
in the Global Compact renews the company's commitment to
strengthening its CSR activities. NEC will continue to ensure this
with its officers and employees and embed the activities into its
daily operations.
As a member of the Global Compact, NEC will more actively
participate in international discussions and contribute to the
further development of this global initiative to help address
social and environmental issues worldwide.
