Tokyo, October 18, 2005 --- NEC LCD Technologies, Ltd. today
announced the successful development of 10.4-inch (26cm diagonal),
amorphous silicon thin-film-transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display
(LCD) modules with the world's fastest Motion Picture Response Time
(MPRT), a standard promoted by the Video Electronics Standards
Association (VESA). Both new models realize the industry's highest
motion picture performance.
Outline of the two new models:
(1)XGA TFT LCD with wide viewing angle for broadcasting and
medical use
This new XGA TFT LCD boasting the world's fastest MPRT of
6.0msec and the industry's highest motion picture performance was
enabled by the following:
-Doubling of the response speed of conventional SFT LCDs through
optimization of the LCD design, comprising of a change in liquid
crystal material and revision of the cell structure, based on NEC
LCD Technologies' proprietary super-advanced, super-fine TFT
(SA-SFT) technology.
-Adoption of a blinking-backlight approach to improve motion
picture blurring caused by hold-type displays, which are typical to
LCDs.
(2)Standard VGA TFT LCD for industrial applications
This new VGA TFT LCD boasting the world's fastest MPRT of
5.0msec and the industry's highest motion picture performance was
enabled by the following:
-Acceleration of the response speed through optimization of the
LCD design, comprising of a change in liquid crystal material and
revision of the cell structure, based on a twisted nematic (TN)
mode, currently the most standard driving method.
-Employment of an over-drive circuit to improve the gray-to-gray
response speed, which has been an issue with TN-mode LCDs to date.
In addition, adoption of a blinking-backlight approach to improve
motion picture blurring caused by hold-type displays, which are
typical to LCDs, and 120Hz driving, which is double the speed of
the usual frame rate, simultaneously.
Recently, the market has seen a rapid increase in the use of
LCDs in PC monitors and TVs, which has brought with it a rise in
demands from not only these fields but also other target fields of
NEC LCD Technologies including broadcasting, medical, measuring
instruments and factory automation. However, issues effecting
motion picture performance still remain such as the slowness of the
response speed of the liquid crystal itself and the afterimage
phenomenon caused by hold-type displays and the characteristics of
human vision.
"We chose to develop a 10.4-inch LCD as this is the largest
scale required in most industrial fields, and we have every
confidence that the dramatic improvement in motion picture
performance in both our new XGA and VGA models will guarantee its
rapid penetration in the marketplace" said Hidetoshi Usui,
department manager in charge of product planning and marketing, NEC
LCD Technologies, Ltd.
NEC LCD Technologies' leading-edge technology and specialized
know-how have earned it a leading position in the market and it
will strive to further advance and develop a range of high
value-added products to meet the various demands of its customers
worldwide.
Both new models will be displayed at FPD International 2005
being held in Pacifico Yokohama, Japan, from October 19 - 21.
