NEC Realizes DRM Software Solution Based on OMA DRM-v2 to Promote Secure Mobile Contents Delivery Services

Tokyo, September 22nd, 2005 - NEC Corporation today announced that it has developed server and client software, which is compliant with Open Mobile Alliance Digital Rights Management version2 (OMA DRM-v2). OMA DRM-v2 is the latest version of digital contents copyright management, a set of technologies that provide the means to control the distribution and consumption of digital media objects. Currently being standardized by OMA, this specification is drawing significant attention worldwide for its realization of secure and flexible mobile contents services.

NEC has been involved in mobile DRM research & development since 1997 and is consequently one of the leading solutions providers in this area. It is also a member of the Board of Directors and on some of the board committees at OMA. Its active involvement in the standardization of OMA DRM-v2 has propelled NEC into a leadership position in this area, and has enabled it to realize this new, unique DRM solution.

From September 12 to 16 in Seoul, Korea, NEC successfully supplied and operated a DRM server and client at OMA Interoperability group (IOP) Test Fest as part of interoperability tests carried out with vendors worldwide. Favorable results were achieved in all of the test items.

NECs DRM server can reliably support a wide range of systems, like from those for service providers to those for services for large mobile operators. NECs DRM client supports both Symbian OS and Linux OS. Moreover, as NEC offers both the DRM server and client, it can provide a total solution in terms of total system consistency and interoperability.

NEC's Digital Rights Management (DRM) software, targeted at operators and content providers who can benefit from its ease of implementation, is one of the first solutions of its kind to appear on the market. The DRM software can be easily integrated into the existing systems of both operators and content providers. Once installed, the software supports both super-distribution and flexible ticketing. Super-distribution entails the controlled forwarding of content. When protected content is forwarded, content recipients must purchase the right to use the content over the air prior to unlocking it. Flexible ticketing enables users to select the purchase options which best meet their needs.

Designed to benefit operators, content providers and users, the system boasts a variety of benefits. For example, operators and content providers will reap the rewards of a safe distribution channel and a flexible billing platform. Content providers will consequently be able to offer a larger range of contents, which will subsequently encourage an increase in future downloads by users. The user benefits from increased selection and should gain satisfaction from the choice of purchase models available.

NEC intends to aggressively promote its new, unique contents delivery solution to the worldwide market based on its line up of OMA DRM-v2 products.
