Tokyo, October 3, 2005 --- NEC Corporation today announced that
it has developed a mobile phone document viewer, which enables
quick, high-quality display of e-mail attachments, even those
comprised of rich media contents such as images and charts, on a
user’s mobile phone. Through its utilization, office documents can
be viewed outside of the office at a quality equivalent to that on
a desktop PC, allowing workers to communicate and execute quick
decisions even while on the move. This technology can also be used
to view manuals or magazines, and is expected to fulfill a broad
range of viewing needs.
Mainly enabled by NEC’s newly developed, proprietary image data
format technology, the viewer achieves the speedy display of images
on a mobile phone.
Its main features are as follows:
(1) Viewing of digital e-mail attachments is realized when the
phone is within the service area. Furthermore, its easy adaptation
to a range of mobile phones is expected as it is coded by Java.
(2) The data format technology allows the display of digital
documents/images after they are generated and converted on the
server. As any kind of data format can be displayed, the need to
install individual application software is made obsolete and its
small memory enables operation on mobile terminals. Moreover, as
all digital documents are converted to a format suitable for
display on a mobile phone with NEC’s data format technology, the
speed at which documents containing multiple images or charts are
displayed is faster than that of a mobile phone PDF viewer.
(3) The image compression method developed by NEC enables
acceleration of the display speed by double that as compared with
JPEG methods due to a lighter processing load (note 1). This new
compression method allows display of both text and images at a
quality equivalent to that on a PC as unlike conventional
compression methods, it causes little deterioration in image
quality. It also enables high quality enlargement or reduction of
documents.
With a working society that is ever increasingly dependent on
e-mail and the transmission of huge volumes of data and text to
execute their daily duties, the need to enable viewing of such data
on mobile terminals at locations outside of the office is on the
rise. Currently, however, many issues still exist toward achieving
this goal. NEC has been carrying out R&D in this area for
several years and with this breakthrough has succeeded in the
development of a mobile phone document viewer that enables viewing
of such documents through the development of NEC’s proprietary
image format and quick image transfer technology.
It is expected that this document viewer will contribute to
increased efficiency in working style and business output. NEC will
continue to develop this technology towards its early
commercialization.
*Notes
1 .It takes several seconds to download converted data for its
display on a mobile phone. NEC’s image format has the same
compression rate as the JPEG format, enabling an equivalent
download time.
