Tokyo, June 29th, 2006 --- NEC Corporation (NEC) announced an
agreement with Telefonica Moviles España, S.A. for delivery of its
Liberty Enabled Proxy. The solution enables the introduction of an
easy sign-on environment for multiple service access by end-users
through a single authentication process over WAP and i-mode mobile
internet browsing.
NEC's Liberty Enabled Proxy, certified by Liberty Alliance
through its conformance tests (*note4), enables terminal
independent single sign-on services over WAP and i-mode. Without
the proxy, special client software for mobile terminals is usually
necessary to benefit from the Liberty single sing-on service.
Traditional single sign-on adopts a centralized authentication
system with one single unified database. However, acceptance of
this kind of centralized system by content providers or website
owners is difficult as they may not agree on a single sign-on
vendor. On the contrary, Liberty single sign-on is a decentralized
authentication system, which is realized through the management of
individual personal data (identity) by content providers (identity
data is exchanged only when approved by end-users). Utilizing
Liberty Alliance's "Federated Identity Management" model, end-users
better trust their registration, so the solution eliminates users'
anxiety about security and privacy.
"NEC's Liberty Enabled Proxy is the collaborative product of
Liberty's excellent market enabling architecture and NEC's
significant expertise and knowledge of mobile systems integration.
This new function can be built on NEC's Mobile Internet Platform
(NEMIP), which facilitates the upgrading of services by
telecommunication providers." Ruth Brannvall, Head of Value Added
Services for NEC in Europe, commented. Building on its experience
with Telefonica Moviles in the delivery of this new Liberty Enabled
Proxy, NEC will expand its value added service business to various
domestic and international carriers.
Telefonica Moviles España, S.A. is Spain's largest mobile
operator with 20.3 million subscribers. TME and NEC built long-term
relations from an agreement for the supply of a mobile multimedia
platform, which enables TME customers to gain access to the i-mode
services and to enjoy multimedia messaging services in 2003
(*note1), and through Multimedia Content Adaptation Solution
(*note2) and Messaging Intelligent Router (*note3) in 2004, the
partnership has continued with the successful operation of the
systems. TME, this time, provides the effective authentication
method to cultivate expansion of contents business.

(*note4):The Liberty Alliance, established on September 2001, is
a broad-based industry standards consortium developing suites of
specifications defining federated identity management and web
services communication protocols for single sign-on services. It
aims to make it easier for consumers to access networked services
from multiple suppliers while protecting security and privacy. NEC
became a member from 2002 and has been active in technical
specification activities since then.
