Tatara’s Femtocell Convergence Solution Integrated into NEC’s
Home Gateway Solution
TOKYO, JAPAN and ACTON, MA – February 6, 2007 - NEC
Corporation (NEC) and Tatara Systems today announced that they have
reached an agreement for NEC to integrate Tatara’s femtocell
convergence solution into NEC’s Home Gateway Solution
architecture. Tatara and NEC will collaborate on end-to-end
solution packaging, marketing, trials and deployments of NEC’s Home
Gateway Solution into the rapidly emerging UMTS femtocell
market.
Utilizing the latest femtocell technology, NEC’s Home Gateway
Solution enables mobile operators to deploy a complete end-to-end
solution, including the femtocell CPE equipment and the supporting
core infrastructure. NEC’s Home Gateway Solution architecture
consists of the 3G Access Point and the Home Gateway Server System
(HGSS). Based on a SIP/IP femtocell architecture approach,
the Tatara Subscriber Gateway and the Tatara Convergence Server are
integrated into the NEC HGSS to provide critical functionality such
as authentication, security, voice and messaging convergence,
supplementary service capabilities.
The NEC Home Gateway Solution enables femtocell deployment and
services in both IMS and more traditional SIP/IP core network
environments utilizing existing softswitch technologies. The Tatara
Convergence Server provides the inter-working between NEC SIP/IMS
elements and an existing mobile network core to enable service
parity among femtocells and the macro cellular network for standard
cellular handsets. The backend HGSS may be deployed as a
complete turnkey system with standard 3GPP interfaces in today’s
mobile network to enable rapid rollout of
femtocells.
A femtocell is a small cellular base station designed for use in
the home or business environments. Routing the 3G mobile
traffic through the IP network via a broadband connection, a
femtocell allows mobile operators to extend service coverage inside
the home without the need for expensive cellular towers, offload
traffic off the macro network, decrease backhaul costs and
stimulate the uptake of 3G services. Femtocell technology is a
practical and attractive option for a fixed mobile convergence
offering, ensuring mobile operators higher ARPU, lower churn and a
solid defense to VoIP erosion. ABI Research has forecasted
that by 2011 there will be 102 million users on 32 million
femtocell access points worldwide.
“Due to their femtocell convergence expertise, innovative
technology and vast experience in the mobile operator marketplace,
Tatara Systems was the clear choice to partner with on NEC’s Home
Gateway Solution,” stated Tadatoshi Fujiwara, General Manager of
Mobile Network Solutions Division, NEC.
“Femtocell is such a compelling fixed-mobile convergence
strategy for mobile operators that there will be a race to bring
the service to market.” said Steve Nicolle, President and CEO of
Tatara Systems. “NEC, with their track record in providing
in-building solutions and their commitment to developing a total
solution for femtocell, is an excellent partner for Tatara and for
our mutual mobile operator customers.”
